About Us

Do you live in Durham, Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland or elsewhere in the North East of England? Do your children speak German? Then you've come to the right place!

Team

The new German Saturday school in Durham is run by a bilingual (DE-EN) mother and experienced German teacher. Our goal is to teach German to children through activities, and to provide them with an environment to make friends in German.

Learning

The German Saturday school Durham strives to create a relaxed and stimulating environment. We play, discover, sing, and do crafts. Children should have fun expanding their knowledge of German by actively and purposefully using the language when reading, listening, writing and speaking.

Community

In historic Durham we can celebrate festivals together, sing songs, read stories and thereby convey German-speaking cultures. We form a community in the North East of England where every child can thrive and everyone is treated with respect.

Our Saturday school for children from German-speaking and bilingual families will open from Autumn 2024!

Christina

Christina Mains-Schultz is originally from Chicago, but has German roots. She lived in Bonn and Berlin, where she partly studied, and also in Frankfurt. In 2017 she earned her doctorate in German studies. She has been working as a German teacher, translator and interpreter for years. Since January 2024 she has been a lecturer in the German Department at Durham University. Christina is the proud mother of two small children. Her first child was born in Germany and is completely bilingual. Christina has founded the DSS Durham so that her and other's children have the opportunity to have a German community.
