About Us

The German Saturday School Leeds (DSSL) aims to improve the oral and written language competence of children with existing German skills and to bring them closer to the culture of German-speaking countries.

Our lessons are aimed at 5-15-year-olds from families in which German is (also) spoken at home. Ideally, the DSSL accompanies the children until they have successfully passed the GCSE German exam in the British school system. (German as a foreign language is not taught.)

Alongside the school lessons, the DSSL offers opportunities for encounters between parents and a playgroup for pre-school children and younger siblings. In the guided pre-school group, listening to and speaking German is also stimulated through crafts, reading aloud and singing.

At seasonal festivals we put on small performances or run activities where children, parents, teachers and family visitors come together in our hall.

We try to create a German-speaking environment in the school and therefore ask everyone present to speak German as much as possible. Of course, English-speaking family members are always welcome.

As we are unable to provide comprehensive supervision, parents/guardians are requested to remain in school during the DSSL lessons. The German School is not liable for accidents during the break.
