About

About Us

Our NEW HomeEd Hub is a flexible, drop-off learning offer for home-educated children, blending German and English in an inspiring, creative environment. With a small group of up to 10 children, each child gets the attention they need to thrive. We combine the warmth of personalised education with the richness and excitement of a new language. Our project-based approach sparks curiosity, develops problem-solving skills and inspires a love of learning and languages. Our hands-on, creative activities - from science experiments to art projects - encourage communication, collaboration, innovation, and real-world learning.

What we offer:

Fun and hands-on language learning in a beautiful and natural environment

  • Freedom and Flexibility: Your child can learn at their own pace, exploring interests and strengths without pressure, picking up a new language on the way.

  • Personalised Education: We tailor learning to each child’s curiosity, providing hands-on projects and outdoor adventures, that spark joy and real connection in two languages.

  • Stress-Free Environment: Our small groups create a nurturing, friendly setting where every child is known and celebrated.

  • Social Learning: Children collaborate, play, and make friends, building essential social skills while discovering a love of languages.

  • A Place to Belong: We provide a flexible, supportive space for children and their families in the heart of Leicester, with plenty of green space, and cosy spots for parents to relax or work nearby.

Join us for just a few hours each week and your child will discover a lovely space for language, creativity, and confident self-expression. We are based at the Leicester Friends Meeting House on Queens Road in Leicester near the city centre, featuring two bright rooms with a wonderful view of Victoria Park, a small kitchen and a lovely enchanted garden we enjoy in any weather. Public transport and free parking is nearby.

The group consists of a maximum of 10 children with one teacher and one helper who both have a current DBS check.

The Benefits of Language Learning

It has been shown that children who know a second language not only learn each additional language more easily and quickly, but also develop better communication skills and are more flexible in their thinking. And for the children, learning a language is simply a great adventure! We make language learning active and effective, involving all the senses in our sessions. We will learn about the festivals and customs of the German-speaking countries as well, in which the children will be actively involved. Your child will build long-lasting bilingual friendships at the HomeEd Hub!

We work closely with you as the parents and are always happy to share our stories and activities and what we have learnt at the HomeEd Hub.

OUR TEAM

Angela Baer Schalch

Angela Baer Schalch

Angie grew up in Switzerland and attended a German-speaking school. She has a background in nursing, and while she may not hold a formal teaching qualification, working with children and young people has always been her passion. Angie loves to create opportunities for children to learn and grow in a nurturing environment.

Together with her family, she has lived on Long Island, in Geneva, and now in Leicester. Her own children are multilingual -speaking Swiss German, German, French, and English - which gives her a deep understanding of multilingualism and international family life.

Angie also teaches at the German Saturday School Leicester.

Julia Sweeney

Julia Sweeney

Julia is a fully qualified and dedicated teacher with nearly two decades of experience working with children and young people aged 2 to 18. Since 2006, she has been teaching German, and also supporting learners with English as an additional language, helping them thrive both academically and socially.

Her inclusive approach is backed by hands-on experience with children who have special educational needs, including those on the autism spectrum. Julia creates a nurturing and adaptable learning environment where every child feels supported.

Since Easter 2020, Julia has been leading the German Kindergarten Leicester as both teacher and manager, combining her passion for education with her deep expertise in language development.
